Welcome back to the Beginner’s Guide to Sewing! Originally, we wanted to introduce hems and elastic in the same video, but there was so much information to cover, we decided to pull a Hollywood and break it up into 2 parts.

In Episode 6, you’ll learn about the parts of a hem and how to sew a simple Double Fold Hem, Blind Stitch Hem (by hand and by machine), and a Single Fold Hem with a finished edge. Then, it’s all about the tips and tricks for sewing hems on knitted fabric.

We’ll also introduce you to a narrow hem, picot hem, faced hem, and bound hem.

You’ll learn how to use a basting stitch to mark your fold and hemlines. You can still use a traditional marking tool; basting is just another way to do it.

Love your videos! Can you please teach us how to do the single fold hem that you are talking about at 4:56 with a Serger, please? I'm trying to make a dress for somebody, and would love for it to look as clean and neat as possible.

  6. Petergy says:

Not sure why you speed up the video at 2:13, sorry but you lose me at that point

  7. Hi Sarah Very Nice tutorial series. I have been following your videos this is my 6th, I learnt important stuff which wasn't taught in my stitching classes and ended up realising the issues I have been trying to figure out from your videos. Keep up the good work.

  8. Ana M Chagas says:

Hi Sarah! New in sewing and in your channel. What sewing machine do you recommend? Can you make a video on all the parts of your sewing machine…thanks. I own a classic Singer from the 50' s, it was my grandmother's machine, back in the days where electricity was unheard off (Brazil's country side). I just made it electric. Amazingly, it works pretty good.

To be able to see all your videos, is there an order? Oh! I am enjoying the way you explain this. Awesome job!!!
